Ivo Babuska, Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and Mathematics, has been awarded the Honorary Medal "De Scientia Et Humanitate Optime Meritis" by the Academy Council of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic for his outstanding achievements which have been acknowledged worldwide.
The Honorary Medal is awarded by the Academy Council for exceptional merits in the field of science and humanity ideas promotion to outstanding scientists, Czech citizens, as well as foreign scientists who contributed to the development of Czech science and culture. It is considered the highest award a person can get from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Dr. Babuska will be presented with this award during a conference organized on the occasion of his 80th birthday in Prague in May 2006.
Dr. Babuska holds the Robert B. Trull Chair in Engineering. He specializes in numerical solution of partial differential equations, especially the finite element method, and applied mathematics in general. His major field of application is continuum mechanics. He has received many honors and awards and several honorary doctorates from various universities around the world, and has published more than 300 scientific publications in the field of mathematics, numerics and mechanics. Dr. Babuska has served on the Cockrell School of Engineering faculty since 1995.
