ASE/EM Professor Bob E. Schutz has been selected to receive the 2008 Dirk Brouwer Award from the American Astronautical Society in recognition of his years of educational and professional contributions to astrodynamics and the aerospace profession. The Brouwer Award was established to honor significant technical contributions to space flight mechanics and astrodynamics and to recognize Dirk Brouwer’s outstanding role in celestial mechanics and his widespread influence on workers in space flight and astrodynamics. The award will be given at the AAS Space Flight Mechanics Winter Meeting Savannah, Georgia.
Dr. Schutz was also selected to serve on the NASA Earth Science Subcommittee, one of five science subcommittees reporting to the NASA Advisory Council. The subcommittees of the Council are a vital link between the science community and the policies and programs that NASA pursues.
Schutz's research interests are Earth satellite applications, including the Global Positioning System (GPS), precision orbit determination, precision attitude determination, orbital mechanics, mission planning and satellite geodesy.
He has served on the Cockrell School of Engineering faculty since 1969. He has two years of industrial experience and has published more than 100 technical articles and reports. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, and the Science Team Leader for the NASA Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS).
