On Orbit Spacecraft Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing
3:30 pm
ASE 1.126
SSL and Maxar Technologies has been a prominent player in the nascent field of on-orbit spacecraft servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. This seminar will present some of the past capabilities in space robotics and how they are now being applied to new business models and missions.
Background:
On-orbit spacecraft servicing, assembly, and manufacturing have received substantial recent attention from industry, government, and academia. Current research funding comes from DARPA and NASA sponsorship and as venture capital. Estimates of market opportunity extend into several billion, as per reports in aerospace trade journals during 2018. This seminar provides insights from a UT alumnus working at the industry leader in this area.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Michael Gabor received his PHD and MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin as an Air Force Palace Knight Fellow and received his BS in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University. He spent 10 years as an Air Force employee supporting the Air Force Research Lab, US Space Command, and Air Force Space Command. He has also worked for Northrop Grumman, TASC, Odyssey Systems, and now works for SSL - part of the Maxar Technologies family of companies. His technical focus areas over the years have included space surveillance and space situational awareness, satellite formation flying, GPS, information assurance, and mission architecting for various Government missions.
