AFOSR High-Energy Radiation-Matter Systems Portfolio Overview

Dr. Joel Bixler
Program Officer
United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research

Wednesday, October 1, 2025
3:30 am - 4:30 pm

BME 3.204

As a vital component of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research has a mission to discover, shape, champion, and transition high risk basic research to profoundly impact the future Air and Space Force. AFOSR accomplishes its mission by cultivating scientific breakthroughs into world-class solutions to boldly go where no science has gone before. This seminar will provide an overview of AFOSR and the High-Energy Radiation Matter Systems (HERMeS) portfolio. HERMeS is focused on controlling the nonlinear/multi-scale/multi-physics phenomena that occur at high energy density.  This allows the production of useful work in the electromagnetic spectrum for a variety of defense related missions. Additionally, this presentation will discuss research done on directed energy bioeffects, including the development of novel imaging tools used for directly visualizing the interactions of pulsed lasers and short pulsed electric fields with biological systems including tissues and cells.
