Steven Villareal

Steven G. Villareal is an accomplished engineering leader with a distinguished 27-year career at SLB, where he has demonstrated a profound passion for creating and developing new technology. Currently serving as the Global Well Construction Drilling New Product Technology Manager, Steven oversees a portfolio of cutting-edge digital & hardware products. In this role, he collaborates with business stakeholders and Researchers to influence and steer the technology product roadmap, leveraging his extensive knowledge of the product development process from ideation to execution.

Villareal's career is marked by significant achievements, including the generation of over 35 US patents and the leadership of multi-disciplinary teams to bring innovative products to market. His areas of expertise encompass product development, creativity and innovation, geothermal energy, portfolio management, and physical system modeling.

Villareal holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he focused on system design, modeling, and advanced control in the Human-Machines Systems Lab chaired by Professor Sheridan.  He also earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, with a focus on heat transfer and physical system modeling (Prof. Schmidt, Prof. Flowers).  Additionally, Steven has completed executive education programs in Digital Business Excellence and Product Management Excellence at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and Sustainable Business Strategy from Harvard School of Business Online.

Throughout his career, Villareal has held various leadership positions, including Technology Center Engineering Manager for Bits & Drilling Tools in Houston and Rotary Steerable Systems & Telemetry in Stonehouse, UK. His contributions to the industry are further highlighted by his involvement in the GEODE – a DOE Program for Geothermal technology transfer managed by Project Interspace - as Drilling SME.

Outside of his professional endeavors, he enjoys hiking, camping, running, and sharing his love of Longhorn football with his wife and three children.
